Junior Golf
Ian has a particular interest in Junior golf. Over the past ten years, membership numbers have been falling and the age profile of golf clubs has been on the rise so it is imperative that we encourage the youth to start playing golf.
With this in mind, Ian has coached the YMG (Young Masters Golf) and the JGI (Junior Golf Ireland) programs to over three hundred children in the Limerick area (at The Golf Academy in Limerick County golf club) as well as over one hundred children in the Nenagh area. Consequently, junior membership has risen in all the golf clubs in Limerick area as well as in Nenagh Golf club.
With the GUI and the ILGU, he assisted in the coaching of the Munster inter provincial junior panels.
Ian believes that juniors are the lifeblood of every golf club. They are the future captain/lady captains, the future members of club teams, the future Padraig Harringtons and the future of the sport in this country. Therefore it is very important that they receive the right coaching not just in how to play the game but also being taught the etiquette and the rules, which are equally important.
Both the YMG and the JGI programs (for each level) take 7 weeks to complete. Each session lasts for an hour where each pupil will learn the three important areas namely:
1. How to play,
2. The etiquette and
3. The rules.
The classes involve a lot of games and prizes. Each pupil will receive a folder with course notes and in the final week, there will be a quiz, not a test!!! Each pupil will receive a certificate also!
